Legendary crooner Tony Bennett has teamed up with the biggest Latino recording artists to produce his latest duet album, Viva Duets, released Monday.
Viva Duets is Tony Bennett’s third duet album, all three were the idea of Bennett’s son. “They ended up selling millions and millions of albums, so we tried the Latin thing,” the 86-year-old singer told Time magazine. “But [the musicians] are so honored that I’m helping them out and showing the world their music, that they have been treating me so beautifully.”
Bennette released Duets: An American Classic in 2006 and Duets II in 2011, both were platinum selling albums. In Viva Duets, Bennett performs his greatest hits with singers Marc Anthony, Christina Aguilera, Gloria Estefan, Chayanne and Thalia among others.
Bennett, who doesn’t speak Spanish, got to know each of the Latino artists during the recording of the songs. He visited each artist in their hometown and met their friends and family. On Monday, Bennett and Dominican singer Juan Luis Guerra performed “Just in Time” on “The Late Show with David Letterman.”
“The Latinos sing right from the heart and with a lot of feeling,” Bennett told Seattle Pi, “They’re such wonderful, friendly people.”
