Poor Alex Smith must be cursed!

As the news hit that Alex Smith has been traded to the Kansas City Chiefs, my heart sunk for this poor guy.  Smith was the first overall draft selection in the 2005 draft, ahead of even Aaron Rodgers.  After struggling his first four or five seasons, Smith seemed to be ready to help the 49ers make a deeper run than even last year.

In his last full start in the NFL, he had an almost statistically perfect game going 18 for 19, for 232 yards, three touchdowns and no pics.  The next game Smith suffered a concussion and Colin Kaepernick stepped in and played too well for Jim Harbaugh to ever let Smith have his job back.  I’m sure watching Kaepernick lead the 49ers to the Super Bowl drove Alex Smith insane, and he has been dying to find out whom he was going to be traded to for months.

Alex Smith to get used to passing under Andy Reid’s style

I wonder what he felt today, when he learned he has been sent to the lowly Chiefs and a pass happy, bad-play calling, no idea how to manage a game clock, walking heart attack of a head coach?  Maybe he is not too familiar with Andy Reid’s body of work and just looks at his overall record?

What Alex Smith is going to have to endure will probably be as painful as watching Kaepernick take control of his team.  Under Reid, Alex is sure to be dialing up 40 to 50 passes a game, which means no running game.  No matter what Reid says he abandons the run, year after year, failure after failure, no matter what. Andy Reid will never run the ball enough to convince a defense the run is something to worry about.  Every single time Smith will be trying to pass, the opposing defense will have its ears pinned back like a hungry pit bull going for blood.

In 2013, poor Smith is going to have little to no offensive line and Reid’s recent track record with O-line drafts picks, and whom he keeps versus those he cuts is simply horrific.  The Chiefs have a solid ground attack, but Reid will not use it 30 times a game, or even 20.  Smith better like the taste of astroturf, grass and everything in between, because he is going to get pummeled every single game by Reid’s very predictable pass happy offense.

Alex Smith should look at KC like a someone who recently got divorced.  You don’t expect to be with the next person you date very long, after the big break up.  Smith will need to play this season, hopefully not suffer a career ending injury, and pray for the day Reid gets fired so he gets to move on to a real team.
