Jimmy Carter says immigration reform should be next

President Barack Obama wasn’t talking about immigration reform on his inauguration day Monday, but former President Jimmy Carter was.

“I think the next thing that’s going to be achieved is finally a partisan approach to alleviating the problems of illegal immigrants and giving them a chance to have self-respect and be legal in their presence here and have movement toward citizenship,” Carter told NBC.

“And I don’t think there’s much doubt after the remarkable participation of Hispanics voters that both parties are saying, ‘What can we do not to alienate this high degree of influence in the next election?’”

“So I would say immigration reform should be that first major achievement.”

Jimmy Carter was among the former presidents and dignitaries in Washington for the inauguration, recalling that it had been a bitter old six degrees when he was sworn into office in January 1977.

“I think this has been a ceremony of high diversity as you may have noticed with race and background and different ethnic groups,” Carter said of the Obama inaugural.

“I think there’s kind of a spirit of harmony and maybe anticipation for a more productive next four years.”

Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton are the only living former Democratic presidents. Former first lady Rosalynn Carter accompanied her husband at the Capitol’s West front.

The two other living presidents, Republicans George W. Bush and his father George H.W. Bush, did not attend. The elder Bush has been ill and was recently released from the hospital.

Carter said he had called the elder Bush in the hospital and had warm feelings toward him.

“He seemed to be quite vigorous and aware of what’s going on in the world,” Carter said. “And he and I talked about some good times together.

“As a matter of fact, strangely enough, when he was at the White House and James Baker was his secretary of state, I had my most intimate and productive—and I’d say friendly relationship—since I left the White House.”

“So I have a special friendship toward George Bush Sr.”

I had the misfortune to live through the Carter administration. As one who was there, take my word for it: whatever Jimmy Carter recommends for the nation, we should do the exact opposite.

Immigration reform can start after this country gets back on its feet. Now is not the time with so many true Americans out of work.True Americans need the jobs to survive in this country. They have been given the Dream Act by Obama already(which takes student loans and grants away from true Americans). Now Obama wants to give immigrants amnesty again. Can we handle these immigrants taking our jobs(even though they may be minimum wage) or how about when they start living off the welfare system or draw Social Security without ever paying a dime into it.
I am not against immigration reform, but now is just not he right time!!!!

Immigration reform must be tackled next and every effort must be taken to pressure our own Senators and Representatives on getting to the table and passing the “Dream Act” that was ready in 2010. President Carter is right ans we deserve passage of the “Dream Act” to keep families from being torn apart. My personal reaction is absolute pride in that a man of color has attained the presidency of these United States. We as citizens of this great nation must continue the fight to get more Hispanics/Latinos into office and positioned well enough to gain this office for one of our own. There are many qualified and educated  Hispanics/Latinos to run for office and become president. The bottom line is we, as a group, with a concerted effort must call, email and write our congress people in our home districts and states to call for them to go to the bargaining table and work to get immigration done. We must bring every bit of pressure on our own Senators and Representatives to work with the president to get immigration passed which will address the real issues of split families and the possibility of becoming citizens of this nation. It doesn’t matter which party they belong to, we must call them. Do not be scared of them and do not back away from your own fears, they cannot hurt you. make your voices known and get everyone you know to do the same every day. We must pressure them to know who will back us and who will not. Then when and if they do not act or fail to pass the immigration bill, then be sure and target them for ouster from the political office they hold. All Hispanic/Latino residents must also get themselves registered to vote if you are here legally. Get yourselves knowledgeable on who is running for office in you district, be sure to vote, and get out the vote!  The 2014 mid-term election is a-coming! Get ready to get out the vote. The TEA party are out in force in certain regions. It’s going to take work – Now, Let’s get to work – Time’s a wasting! The 2014 mid-term election is a-coming!

We should be pressuring Obama to DEPORT the PARENTS of illegal alien “children” before there is any discussion of amnesty for the children.  All amnesty for the kids would do is reward them for their parents’ and then their own law breaking and encourage more illegal immigration.
