Award-winning actor Ben Affleck tells Details magazine that 2003, the year he dated Jennifer Lopez, was his worst year ever. The 40-year-old actor and father of three with actress Jennifer Garner reflects on his relationship with Jennifer Lopez in the October issue of Details.
“In our culture, we get very much into shorthanding people. And I got shorthanded as That Guy: Jennifer Lopez, movies bombed, therefore he must be a sort of thoughtless dilettante, solipsistic consumer blahblahblah.
It’s hard to shake those sort of narratives. If you were looking at that one-liner on me in 2003, which was definitely the annus horribilis [laughs] of my life.”

That year Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez were in love and planned to marry on September 14, 2003 in Santa Barbara, Calif. in front of 400 guests, but the wedding was abruptly cancelled. The couple blamed it on leaks about the wedding to the paparazzi, however it was never rescheduled. Was that Ben Affleck’s worst year ever epiphany?
Several months later in January 2004, the media was hit with the Bennifer break up. Ben Affleck’s worst year ever was finally over—it was actually 18-months long.
While Ben Affleck is best known for starring in and co-writing “Good Will Hunting” and winning an Oscar for his work, many people found it hard to consider him as a serious actor after dating Jennifer Lopez.
“People bring up 2003, and I get it. Jennifer Lopez, and Gigli, and all this shit just kind of blew up. But, you know, in 2003, Barack Obama was a state senator in Illinois! Okay.” Ben Affleck tells Details.
